Without doubt asbestos has proved to be one of the most successful products of all time being used for fire prevention and insulation. However, during the early part of the 1900’s concerns were expressed about the number of asbestos textile workers suffering from chest complaints. Subsequent reports highlighted the large numbers of people who had worked with asbestos developing asbestosis and eventually a link was recognized between asbestos work and lung cancer.
It is thought that because controls over using, handling and working with asbestos were only introduced during the late 1960’s cases of mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer, will increase into the twenty first century.
There are three main types of asbestos. These are commonly called Blue Asbestos (Crocidolite), Brown Asbestos (Amosite) and White Asbestos (Chrysotile). All of them are carcinogenic. Blue and brown asbestos however, are considered more hazardous than white. However, you cannot identify them just by their colour.
Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 requires building duty holders to manage asbestos in non-domestic premises. This applies to all who have maintenance and repair responsibilities for such buildings, whether you are the tenant, hold a service contract, or if you own the premises.
